The 2006 FIFA World Cup was the 18th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football world championship tournament. It was held from 9 June to 9 July 2006 in Germany. The final match was played on 9 July at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, and was contested by Italy and France. Italy won the match 5-3 on penalties after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time. It was Italy's fourth World Cup title, and their first since 1982. France were runners-up for the second time, having also lost the 1998 final to Brazil.
