Heavy rains lash UAE, causing flooding and chaos

70-year-old man dies after being swept away by floodwaters

Dubai International Airport closed due to flooding

Heavy thunderstorms have lashed the United Arab Emirates (UAE), causing widespread flooding and chaos. The rains, which began on Tuesday, have dumped more than a year and a half's worth of rain on the desert city-state of Dubai in just a few hours, flooding major roads, businesses, and homes.

A 70-year-old man died after his vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in the UAE's Ras Al-Khaimah, a police statement said on Tuesday. The rainfall continued to shift east on Wednesday, bringing more flooding and chaos to the UAE.

The heavy rains also flooded parts of Dubai International Airport, causing scores of flight delays and cancellations. The airport has since been closed due to the flooding.

The National Center of Meteorology has issued a red warning for heavy rain and flooding in the UAE. The warning is in effect until midnight on Wednesday.

Residents in affected areas are urged to stay indoors and avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.
